Hello!

Been busy so let me just jump in with some drawings.

I'm still working on the robot and boy story, but it definitely needs help. However I have decided to finish it with my original idea of doing a shot at a time. Here are a few more.

We've been playing ping pong at the studio! Its a fun break from drawing and also is fun to be competitive with the story crew.

I'm also toying with another idea which I am really excited and confident in, which is very rare! I think that it will go well. here's a sneak peak., just working on the story before any design comes in.

Other than that life is good, I'm enjoying living in New York City and working here. I have a few trips planned coming up to explore even more of the east coast. Meg is cranking out jewelry like there's no tomorrow, trying to keep up with her orders.

In the next week or so I will be posting more stuff. Stay tuned!

Hi all! A ton has happened since my last post, and really I'm not sure where to start, except with something recent and a drawing!

This past weekend, I went with some of the sto

ry department to Phoenicia at the foot of the Catskills and went toobing down the river. It was a ton of fun, the weather was warm and the water was refreshing. There were even a few fun rapids that decided to throw us around! That and water sprites were grabbing our feet.

Anyways, still adjusting to life in Manhattan, more on that later. xoxo

Hello!

Happy Tuesday!
This one goes out to my studio mates! We've been sharing a big room in Cinematico's studio space for a couple of years now. Its been fantastic and a great place to be. I've spent quite a LOT of time working in this space, and its been great! Check out Cinematico's new site!

Pascal Campion and I have worked together going back a few years. Since we have a similar work ethic, we decided to move into a studio together after we both left. Pascal's artwork and consistency in creating a finished story sketch everyday inspires me greatly to keep up my blog and to share my ideas.

Lyla Warren 's artwork and animation is amazing! She is great at thinking out and discussing her ideas and trying to use animation for the greater good!

Andy Ristaino's animation and comics continue to impress! You can check out his comics through SLG, and his latest book "Escape from Dullsville" is coming out very soon!

Salutations, comrades of the web!

I have some really big news! At the end of this month, I will be starting a new job as a storyboard artist at Blue Sky Studios in Greenwich, CT (about a stones throw from NYC!). This is an absolute dream come true, needless to say I am elated (aka bouncing off of the walls more than usual). I am also very nervous, and hoping to do well so that they will keep me on for a good while. There’s a massive Amazonian butterfly doing Tae-Bo in my stomach but don’t worry, I’ll throw a hamburger on it later tonight.

It all went down when I posted on my blog that I would be in New York, and while I was visiting my aunt on Long Island, I got a call from the recruiter at Blue Sky telling me that they had seen on my blog that I was in the area and asked me if I had time on my short trip to come in for an interview. I was thrilled at the opportunity and got over there a few days later! The interview was really enjoyable, what a great group of people! I was really happy to find that there were a lot of fun drawings on the walls and great people eager to make amazing movies! I pitched some thumbnail drawings that I happened to have on me to the directors and the storyboard teams while I was there. They were kind enough to sit through my chicken scratch and I got some insight into my own pitch from their feedback. Everyone there was really nice and at the end I left the studio feeling like I had a really great time. I have a lot of high hopes for my time there, and I know that I am going to learn a ton about storytelling. The standard is high and I know that I am going to get my ass handed to me so I plan on giving it my all! The standard at Blue Sky is astronomic and their movies are so incredible, I’m anxious to jump in!

Friends and Family

First and foremost I have to give recognition to all of the wonderful people who have made up my support system over the years. It’s really true that you cannot do it all on your own. I am so lucky to be surrounded by such wonderful folks and I feel that my entire personality is made up of bits and pieces of all of them. This is especially true of my patient fiancée Meghan encouraging me every step of the way. She’s the most amazing person that I’ve ever known. I’ll post more on friends and family in the up coming weeks!

Mentors and teammates
One thing that I am really looking forward to in the new gig is having a good mentor, director and team to help me grow in my artistic endeavors. I have been quite on my own for the past few years, when all of the creative directors left the animation department at LF, and then again when I went freelance slowly building up a boutique animation company around my skills in games. But getting a company of of the ground requires things like hiring contractors and taking on larger projects, requiring quite a bit of playing boss/planning/scheduling/tweaking/delivering (this is also known as ‘not making art time’). I do not mean to discredit the amazing companions that I work with at the studio, far from it. They are a great inspiration to me, but we are all so strong and independent in our work that it’s been a bit like herding cats to get us to work together on anything. Being independent has been a great learning experience, but it has proven to be very lonely.

Leaving beautiful SF will be hard with its blue atmosphere, timeless magic and hilly landscapes; the life that I have built here with my good friends and coworkers has given me so much support and that will be difficult to give up. Then again… I am at a point in my life where I am still flexible enough to make a big move and I would very much like to live in/near New York City. Somehow, I’ve also hypnotized Meg into the idea to move with me so… here goes!

For the next two weeks I will be in San Francisco running around trying to pack up my life into a carry-on. I plan on trying to see as many people as possible, so drop me a line if you are around so that I can see you before I, like, lose my west coast status, broheme! Tata for now!

East coast trip!

Hello, hello! I'm back from the east coast! I had a terrific trip. I expected it to be insane but ended up to be a very relaxing time. I think that the east coast has lost its edge! Kidding, I'm just old. I first flew to Philadelphia to meet Meggie at the tail end of her jewelry trade show. Since I packed all of her crazy display cases and materials to be shipped to Philadelphia, it only makes sense that I had to pack them back up and send them to San Francisco : ). I did however get to fit in a decent Philly cheese steak. The snow was heavy, but that made the trip more fun by contrast with the snow-free bay area.

I then went to visit my aunt who lives on Long Island. I got outside to shovel her driveway. The 7 year old neighbor kid showed me how. "He's a thirty year old man who has never shoveled snow! What do you think of that?" asks my aunt, pointing at me. The kid just raises his eyebrows and shakes his head. Gotta start sometime!

New York City was fantastic! Had a great time gorging myself on the good food there along with walking, cabin and taking the subway to different spots. My friend Luca’s friend Gene was nice enough to meet for drinks and to show us a bit of the city. Her work is really great, check it out here. Thanks Gene!

Studio Nos

An unreal stop motion studio in Williamsburg that I had the great fortune to visit! What creative work with textures and forms! Truly inspirational. I walked out of that studio feeling refreshed and excited about animation. You should definitely check out their amazing work! Matt and Jeremy, the animators and directors at the studio are two very kind individuals. They took time out of their crazy busy day to give us a tour of the studio and to show us some of their personal work as well. Amazing all around! Blue Sky

I also had a chance to drop by the incredible Blue Sky Studios way up in Greenwich, Connecticut. This trip was a bit of a surprise and I had a chance to meet a bunch of the people there: story team, directors and producers. They were great and patiently sat through a quick thumbnail pitch of a project that I am working on. Thanks for the tour guys!

And of course right when I got back to SF a bunch of things happened and I missed yesterday’s post, but that’s okay, here are a few drawings for today! The first is a drawing in my sketchbook from a time when a friend and I hiking through the So Cal hills came across the remains of a dog that had been eaten by coyotes:

A lot of people have been asking about this story with the robot and the boy that I keep posting. What is it for? What is it about? Why is it in a million pieces of still art? When will it end?

This is a short story being slowly laid out little by little each day until it is finished. The story will be put to a music track written by the terribly talented Matias Cudich. You can check out the beginning of the music here:

The story started as a basic idea that my friend Matias and I were discussing as a possible collaboration. We decided to make a music video together. Matias is a terrific guitar player and musician so he is handling the musical part, and I am handling the visuals and the writing of the story. I seem to be constantly editing and rewriting the story as it goes, but I will probably edit it down quite a bit whenever it's finished.

I am tackling this large project as a warm up sketch most days of the week so it can actually get done on top of my other piles and piles of work. When it is done it will hopefully be a boardomatic-style music video and/or a neat little booklet! : )

Salutations!

I had a meeting with an accountant this week. Just like going to the mechanic, they make you feel like you're 4 years old again, shaking their head at you for not knowing the exact definition of inventory, business renter's insurance vs. renter's insurance and all that. If I knew that stuff, I wouldn't need help! Maybe this will teach me to be a bit more patient with my clients as well.

Now where was I?

Oh yeah, I'm not the most organized person. I would like to say that I am at least organized enough to function in my life independently without any major catastrophes (so far!). That’s all well and good, and of course my organization skills could be improved upon. I understand the benefit of being very organized, however I would want creating art to be paramount in my life, and I’ll just go ahead and let organization fall to a distant second or third on the priority list. Fine with me.

Hello!

Back to the boy and robot story, i think that I have a good bend to it that will take it into the direction that i want it to go. Of course, I thought of it in the shower this morning. The shower is the place where I do my most important and critical thinking. Why is that? Maybe that its the point where I feel that I am preparing for the rest of the day? Maybe its getting back to the primordial roots of evolution, being enveloped in warm water. Not sure. Frank and Ollie (amazing Disney animators) said that they would get their inspiration from shaving with the electric razor in the morning.

Salutations!

Its 2010! A new year is upon us, and like a lot of people at the beginning of the year, I am excited to have the opportunity to re-evaluate my life directions and choices, expand on others, and to get rid of others. For the past two years I have been really trying to follow through on my resolutions with some success! So this year will hopefully be no exception.

First and foremost, I plan on spreading out my activities a bit. I got just too bogged down with work in the past few months and have been unable to breathe ( hence the absence of posts!). It is dangerous to list out your resolutions, as you may look back at unattained goals and feel like a failure. So I feel that it is good practice to also be flexible with your goals.

I’ll post more about my goals here to follow, but I wanted to include a few sketches since this is an art blog and I like to draw and share!

Here is a random sketch that I liked of a monster for no reason other than fun:

And here is a sketch from a story that I’ve been formulating in my mind about human vs machine decision making. Here I am just playing around with future worlds. I think that it’s a bit odd to think that humans will be comfortable living in big cold shell-like ships. I think that would last for about ten seconds and then people would start dreaming about the sun and plants and earth tones, comforting things. Why wouldn’t we expect a future world to be more comfortable than the one that we are living in now? Anyways, it needs work, and I’ll do some more iterations, most likely after the robot story.

Back in San Francisco after a nice holiday with family and friends. Unfortunately I was not able to see all of the buddies that I would have hoped to see, but that's usually how it goes : /.

This is for the DrawerGeeks theme this week, "teeth". Although there is not teeth involved in this shot, there definitely are teeth involved in this movie! This is from a great horror movie called IT written by Stephen King. What I find most frightening about horror films is the occasional piece that is completely out of place. That really sends my imagination spinning into crazy land. Its truly disorienting... I love it!

Hello!

Welcome back to Monday. Rainy here in San Francisco, but my spirits are high because APE
(Alternative Press Expo) was this weekend and it was a total blast. It felt great to sell my artwork and to be inspired by all of the creativity that the other exhibitors have to offer. Amazing all around!

I am just about out of books and prints, but i might put a list of both up here that people can request if I ran out or they couldn't make it. Hit me up if you want to get one!

Also, I have been working forever on a project with my extremely talented musician friend Matias. I really want to work on it but with everything else, its difficult, so I am going to try to work on it with my sketches here and there and get it done.
